DESCRIPTION

The infamous Huntley & Palmers ‘Rude’ biscuit tin – circa 1980.  Featuring an Edwardian garden party scene with copulating people and dogs plus part of a rude word shown on a condiment jar.

Huntley & Palmer started packing their biscuits in decorative tins in the mid-19th century and there have since been hundreds of designs, many of which are now highly collectible.  This one, inspired by the illustrations of Victorian artist Kate Greenaway caused quite a stir when it was discovered that the artist had snuck in some naughty details; it even hit the national press and Huntley and Palmer immediately removed them from sale.  At the time it was speculated that it had been done by a disgruntled employee but it later emerged that it had been done by freelance artist Mick Hill who revealed in an interview with the BBC that he had done it out of “pure devilment”.

DIMENSIONS – 20.5cm in diameter
