DESCRIPTION

An original etching of a mummy’s head printed in Paris, France and dating from the first quarter of the 19th century.

This piece is plate 49 taken from volume II of the book ‘Description de l’Egypte’ (or the full title in English: ‘Description of Egypt or collection of observations and research made in Egypt during the French expedition, published on the orders of His Majesty the Emperor Napoleon the Great’).

The text translates to: “THEBES.  HYPOGEUM.  PROFILE AND FACE OF A MALE MUMMY’S HEAD”.

Framed and glazed.

DIMENSIONS – W:  61cm x H:  51cm

CONDITION

It is 200 years old and clearly has some issues.  There is water damage to both sides and a couple of small tears on the edges of the paper.  There are also numerous creases and marks to the paper and an old tape mark to the bottom left-hand corner.  The frame has numerous areas of damage but remains solid and the glass is in good shape (I wouldn’t normally be interested in an etching with this type of damage but I think in this case it adds even more character to this macabre piece) - please look very closely at the pictures as they form part of the description.
